The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK, or Britain) is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe. It is an island country, spanning an archipelago including Great Britain, the northeastern part of Ireland, and many small islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. The largest island, Great Britain, is linked to France by the Channel Tunnel. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is governed by a parliamentary system with its seat of government in London, the capital, but with three devolved national administrations in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, the capitals of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland respectively. The Channel Island bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey, and the Isle of Man are Crown Dependencies and not part of the UK. The UK has fourteen overseas territories, all remnants of the British Empire, which at its height in 1922 encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land surface, the largest empire in history. British influence can continue to be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former colonies. The UK is a developed country, with the world's sixth largest economy by nominal GDP and the seventh largest by purchasing power parity. It was the world's first industrialised country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the economic cost of two world wars and the decline of its empire in the latter half of the 20th century diminished its leading role in global affairs. The UK nevertheless remains a major power with strong economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence. It is a nuclear power and has the fourth highest defence spending in the world. It is a Member State of the European Union, holds a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, G8, OECD, NATO, and the World Trade Organization. GNU Free Documentation License Is there a geographic difference between The United Kingdom and Great Britain? Q. Are they the same or is one a subset of the other as England is a subset of the United Kingdom? I've asked this question of English friends only to have them give me different answers. Asked by Patrick - Thu Sep 20 20:36:27 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. To settle this once & for all. The united kingdom is the union of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, including whatever islands are also included in those countries. The full name of the United Kingdom is the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland. The United Kingdom itself is a country. Thus it is a country that is made up of four countries. A country made of countries might seem a paradox, yet the countries that make up the UK, especially England, Scotland, and Wales, do not think of themselves as anything less; Scotland has its own Parliament and banknotes, Wales has its own language and National Assembly, all three have national identities going back more than a thousand years, and the Encyclopedia… [cont.] Answered by Basement Bob - Fri Sep 21 05:52:24 2007 How can American move to United Kingdom? Q. My fiance lives in United Kingdom. We plan to marry and live in Scotland where he resides. After reviewing visa processes I am terribly confused. Should I apply for a fiance visa or work visa? What are the fees? I heard they are non-refundable. How do I know which one to apply for? Is there someone who can advise us? Which is an easier process? Unless you have at least a Masters degree and a high salary, you can't get a work visa on your own. But he can sponsor you for a fiance visa as long as you get married within 90 days of arriving Answered by unknown - Fri Mar 20 00:38:55 2009 How can I copy a VHS movie from the United Kingdom to a VHS or DVD that plays on American VHS or DVD player?
Q. I bought a VHS video and did not realize it would be different coming from the United Kingdom. Does anybody know where I can have it transfered to an american VHS or DVD? It is very important to me. I asked this question before but the suggestions didn't work. I live in Georgia but can mail it somewhere else if needed. Thank you so much. Take it to a video shop, somebody ought to have the equipment to exchange the PAL/NTSC formats. Or buy a dual format video (many video players already play both PAL and NTSC, though you might need to flick a switch). Secondly, DVD. There is no format difference between US and UK. However, many DVDs - especially movies - contain a region encoding. In this case you should buy a multi-region DVD player (there are loads of these about as well).
