A man convicted of kidnapping and raping an Oxnard toddler could learn his fate today.
Does sentencing ever take place immediately after the verdict?
Q. Law & Order probably isn't the most reliable source. But I'm curious - from what I seen in one SVU episode, a family court judge read "I find you guilty and I hereby sentence you to ___" Now, is that anywhere near accurate? I always thought there was a separate court date for sentencing, or this could just be unique to family court. Shed some light?

A. It can happen, but usually doesn't for felonies. The court usually wants to wait for probation reports and other factors before deciding on a sentence. There are exceptions. Many misdemeanor cases will have a standard disposition, and sentencing will not be affected by probation reports...like DUI's.
