Quotation marks or inverted commas (informally referred to as quotes and speech marks) are punctuation marks used in pairs to set off speech, a quotation, a phrase, or a word. They come as a pair of opening and closing marks in either of two styles: single (‘. . .’) or double (“. . .”).

Depending on the typeface, opening and closing quotation marks may be identical in form (called "vertical", "straight", or "typewriter" quotation marks), or they may be distinctly left-handed and right-handed ("typographic" or, colloquially, "curly" quotation marks). The closing single quotation mark is identical or similar in form to the apostrophe, and similar to the prime symbol. These three characters have quite different purposes, however. How do "lefties" deal with being on synchronized skating team?
Q. I'm not planning to go on a team, but I was just curious. I'm a lefty, and I have a definite favorable side with certain moves - say like spread eagle. I can do some moves both directions, but I wouldn't be comfortable at all being linked to others in doing them on my "bad" side. If I were on a synchronized skating team, I would think the majority would be "righties". Do lefties have to just be able to skate everything in the majority direction??? Just wondering!

A. Hello.. I'm a lefty and I skate on 2 synchro teams and in singles.. one for my club and on a provincial team.. and I don't have too much trouble fitting in.. just remind your coach that you would prefer to do things opposite everyone else and sometimes they are able to accomodate your needs but sometimes you just have to go with the majority.. You eventually get used to doing moves both ways, Like with my team, we had to do individual camel spins, and I had to learn to do a camel spin the opposite way, I worked hard at it and it got good enough that my coach was able to put it into my singles program and got extra marks for difficulty..ahha, so it pays off a little lol.. and for my team of 16 there are only 2 leftys and the rest are… [cont.]

What's the difference between "bio" and "non-bio" laundry tabs?
Q. I'm a student and was shopping for laundry gel tabs, the kind you just throw in with the laundry like from Persil, Ariel, etc. Some say "bio" or "biological" - some say "non-Bio". Both seem to be advertised as if they were identical, but there IS a difference! Can anyone please help me out and tell me how the difference affects me as a consumer?

A. Biological has got more cleaning power but also more chemicals. Non-biological is better for the environment (marginally) and less harsh on sensitive skin. It is also gentler on the clothes and they don't fade so quickly.

What's the difference between "after having received" and "after receiving"?
Q. What's the difference between "After having received" and "After receiving"? What kinds of ocassions can I use the two above respectively?
Asked by Jim - Wed Nov 22 08:38:48 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They mean the same thing, although the first one is slightly more passive. But you could use either one where you use the other. Note that if someone wanted to be picky-tricky, they would say that the first one has more words and more letters than the second one, that's the only real difference.
