How to memorize marching band music?
Q. Well I have the music and I play baritone but the problem is how do I memorize it? I'm good at memorizing piano music but our marching band music has different times so that is gonna mess me up. I need tips on memorizing fast and well and I don't have a home baritone, I play the school's baritone. And yeah this is my first year in marching band. I need to memorize quickly because rehearsal for the music is near the end of july!!! Please help!

A. My suggestion would be to play over it as often as possible. Go through and look for similar patterns and find ways to help yourself memorize it. Even when you don't have the baritone, go over and do the fingerings on a pencil (or something more suited to your instrument - I played flute and that was easiest for me) and hum the music under your breath. Marching music isn't terribly complicated, so I would suggest that as long as you just practice the fingerings over and over again, you'll get a good general idea of how it goes. I think you'll find that once you get there, there will be a lot of people who don't have a total handle on the music. It'll look good for you if you do, but even the strictest marching bands (I came from one) aren' [cont.]

what is the difference between a marching baritone and a marching euphonium?
Q. i was just a few minutes ago on the phantom regiments website and saw that they had both marching euphoniums and marching baritones for sale. I thought that a marching baritone and a euphonium were the same thing. What is the difference between the two. The euphonium looks like it has a smaller bore than the baritone. Or are they the same thing?

A. Marching baritones and marching euphoniums are really alot alike, but there are a few differences. Baritones have a different bore size than a euphonium. In other words, the radius of the tubing in a baritone is smaller than that of a euphonium. Second, euphs are really big huge instruments, especially the marching versions. Marching one of those (especially in a drum corps) is just about as hard as carrying a tuba in front of your face. The main difference though is the quality of sound that you get between the two. Since euphoniums have a larger bore, they can take alot more air, but they also have a lower register than the baritone. Euphoniums usually play the bottom baritone parts (cause its hard to play high on a euph). Phantom… [cont.]

How would you make a cake shaped like a marching band hat?
Q. I'm trying to make a cake for the seniors in the marching band at my high school. It's going to be in the shape of a shako hat with a plume on it, and i have pretty much everything figured out as far as shapes go, but I have no idea how to make the plume that goes on top. Do I use cotton candy or something? Suggestions for any of it would be much appreciated :D Thanks!

A. Why don't you just make a cake shaped like a drum. Then you could just bake the cake in two round cake pans, frost them your school colors, and be done with it.

How do you learn how to play the quads for marching band in a year?
Q. I'm in the United High School Marching Band and i'm a snare drummer this year. I'm very good on the snare but i really want to be a quad player. I got to be able to learn within a year and have to be able to beat our quad player from this year. I'm willing to practice as much as i have too. Can anyone give me any tips on learning the quads a little fast
Asked by Ashley Force's Biggest fan - Mon Sep 22 18:18:43 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. See if any former quad players would want to help you out. There's a couple kids on our bass line that want to play quads and our senior quad player will teach them portions of a cadence at a time until they know the whole cadence. It seems helpful, I'll hear quad music and go in our storage room and see them playing cadences. :D

A. How about some play on "Heavy Metal"? Have "HEavy Metal with a line through it, and "Weighty Brass" written in instead. or "I've got a Big Brass and I'm proud of it." or "...and I know how to use it."

What is a good inexpensive Bb Clarinet mouthpiece for marching season?
Q. Last year, my old mouthpiece got a slight chip during marching season that signaled the end of its life. During the spring, I bought a custom mouthpiece locally through my clarinet instructor. I have never purchased a mouthpiece that did not come with the clarinet or without the suggestion of my instructor/director. What should I look for in a durable marching mouthpiece? Would you suggest a rubber or plastic one? I don't want to spend more than $60 or so.
Asked by - Mon Jul 6 20:42:53 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. From my experience, the plastic mouthpieces are more durable and resilient than rubber ones ( Vandoren anyway). I actually really like the Premier by Hite; smashed it into a brick wall just before a concert, but it still plays quite well. The Yamahas are pretty good too, but haven't had that much experience with other mouthpieces. However, the most durable and indestructable mouthpieces I've seen are the Rico Graftonites, you can do anything to them and nothing will happen. Unfortunately, they sound really bad... really, really bad... even for marching... So a better way to chose would be to try all the plastic mouthpieces available and use the one that sounds best/loudest. Most plastic mouthpieces would be under AU$60 anyway. However, if… [cont.]

Asked by wildthang116 - Wed Jan 23 19:16:49 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Take it step by step. First look for colleges with dental schools or whatever you need. Then narrow the selection down by colleges you're willing to attend by location. Then you can look into all the little stuff. The college search on collegeboard.com helps you narrow down colleges based on whatever criteria you specify. Plus, it's not confusing and the site is attractive (laid out well, easy to navigate, etc).

Could it be possible to play the piano in a marching band?
Q. Like the keyboard on the sidelines...by the xylophones...I'm sure that's possible, but what about if you are marching in a parade or something? Are there pianos light enough that you can carry with a chest or shoulder strap? Or do xylophones march in parades, even?

A. yes. its called the BELLS. most piano players in band will play bells in marching. it has the same set up as piano, but all the "black" keys are on the upper half, I'm assuming you're in high school or younger, colleges wont march a piano because there is no room for it in the music. no one composes marches with piano part. you'd end up playing a bell part, and then you might as well just play bells then. and the sound. you know how if its a soft clarinet soli, a random trumpet doesn't sound good with it? same pertains to piano, it really has no part in marching band, it just doesn't have the right sound. not to mention, if you're actually marching, and you have to keep on step, it would be rather difficult to roll along a piano or… [cont.]

"Mardi Gras Mambo" by The Hawketts (written in 1954 by Art Neville). Why are there not enough people joining marching band?
Q. I have been in marching band for four years, and i am sad to admit that i cannot join it ever again. (colleges don't have cool competitions.) but i want to help recruit people, because i know Marching band changed my LIFE. so, erm, why do you people think that we are losing members? i already have an idea, but i want to hear other people's opinions. oh, and if you are in the south, i know marching bands are flourishing there. this is more of a New England problem that i would like to fix.
Asked by Nelle - Sun Nov 11 10:20:07 2007 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments

A. i think that most people do not join marching band because they think it is a dorky thing to do. they do not realize how much work and sweat it takes to make the best show ever. they usually think that they are too cool to join a band with a bunch of people and make great music. which is sad. i have been in the marching band for 3 years and love it. i can't believe how little people really know about marching band. i think that if talented musicians really knew about what it takes to be in marching band and how much fun it is, they would probably join in a heart-beat. it is just getting past the idea that people have stereotyped it as "band fag-ish, and dorky".

Q. Even though i don't have drum experience i do have musical experience playing clarinet for 7 years so i know music. however i've always wanted to play snare but never had an opportunity so now i wanted to learn how to play marching snare.

A. I too, am a clarinetist. I tried percussion for about a week but stopped. Maybe it's because I didn't have the willpower, but it was hard to learn! However through my years of marching band, there have been several wind players that have made drumline or pit. That was because they played a non-marching instrument like the oboe or bassoon, though. Try it, but I wouldn't recommend it. Stick to the clarinet!

Do you think that Marching Band is a sport?
Q. I do! It's so hard, and they work you until you can barely play your instrument. In my marching band we need to earn our water breaks, and they are only like three minute long. I'm sorry this is in the wrong section, I clicked on the wrong little tab.

A. It is most definitely a sport. But Marching Band members never get credit where credit is due. I play Tenor Drums or Quads in a band of about 20 (Yes, 20, everyone quit) in Virginia. But unfortunately, we are constantly overshadowed by Cheerleading, Football, Wrestling, and other Fall sports. But, honestly, most bands practice more than these other sports. We have a week of percussion camp, and then a week of band camp, during which we get two fifteen minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch break a day. no water breaks. And we Practice every day, rain or shine. Then we go to football games and stay out till 3 in the morning, then come back at 7 in the morning to go to competitions. A. Well my friends had like size 0 gauges and they had to wear band aids or clear gauge in it so it wouldn't show, and a few girls had nose rings but i think they just wore a really tiny stud or one of the clear ones mostly. for us, my director doesn't really care about it at football games but idk about you. as long as you wear the clear stud you should be fine,it's not like the band teacher can make you NOT wear something if it's still healing.

A. You're going to have to dry clean them or spot clean them yourself. Try vinegar or rubbing alcohol and an old toothbrush or soft cloth. You might want to slightly dilute the rubbing alcohol since it doesn't smell too good.
