What if a marching band was like a human body?
Q. Alright. Say a marching band is like a human body. If the drumline is the "heart" of the marching band, what body organs do you think the other groups in the band correspond to? Here are a few to think about: drum major, colorguard, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, mellophone, baritone, tuba, and front ensemble (pit). If there are more, feel free to add on. Use your imagination!

I need to buy a marching baritone online for at most 700 dollars. Any good websites?
Q. I only have 700 dollars for a marching baritone. A yamaha would be good but any other great company that makes marching tones would work too. A silver one preferably.

A. Look up Woodwind and Brasswind (link below). They often have great rates on student instruments.

Can playing in a concert/marching band damage your hearing?
Q. I also heard some types of instruments damage your hearing more than others. In high school, I plan to play the clarinet or bassoon in concert band, and the clarinet in marching band.
Asked by Rukario Lucario - Wed Dec 5 22:13:50 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Be careful - many of the answers here are incorrect!! You can damage your hearing. High school marching bands hold numerous rehearsals indoors and, even in a large band room, will affect your hearing. I'm a professional clarinetist and use Etymotic ear plugs - these are designed for musicians. They are more advanced than generic ear plugs from the drugstore and the cost is affordable - $10. For an extra buck, you can have a cord connect the two plugs behind your head. When you're not using the plugs, they rest on your shoulders. Use now and be thankful later.

I have recently decided that I want to pursue a career in nursing instead of becoming a music major. I'm not sure what school I want to go to but would like to know if anyone has any suggestions?

How can I improve my marching technique?
Q. This is my first year in marching band, marching second trumpet, and I was really wondering what I can do to make marching easier and improve my dynamics, breathing, and sound, because I want to make a really good impression my first week.
Asked by The Hidden Essa - Thu Jun 19 22:25:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. for the technique, keep your toes up on the forward march and roll from the heel to the toes. try not to wobble side to side or bounce up and down. the rolling should be more of a glide. for the backwards march, stay on the balls of your feet and barely lift it when marching backwards. you should still feel the grass underneath or be about an inch or less away from the pavement. for both forwards and backwards marching, find your center of balance. it helps if you lean forward but not too much. also, never bend your knees. it's straight leg for both. it might be different at your high school but that's how it is for mine. the rest is more of conditioning. i would run as much as i can until camp starts. it also helps with endurance. if… [cont.]

Q. What instrument is the hardest to play for marching ban? I play the tuba but everyone claims that theirs is harder to play.
Asked by Matilda93 - Fri Jun 12 16:20:18 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the baritone, having to hold up that heavy instrument for 7-8 minutes with just your arms is an incredible burn. technique wise, i would have to say the drumline. all the work they have to put in to make there playing 100% perfect is just incredible. and also the way they have to hold them selves while marching looks very difficult.

What would a proper balance of instruments and drums be for a marching band of 70-80 members?
Q. We're a marching band of about 70-80 members - I'm concerned that we don't sound balanced, especially the number of drum line as compared to instrumentalists. Just wondering if there is anyone out there with marching band experience that could shed some light on the situation.
Asked by marchingband38 - Fri Mar 6 12:04:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. depends on the music you are playing really. Enough percussion to cover the bases but not over power the instrumentalists since the percussionists are naturally one of the loudest instruments in a marching band albeit one of the most important. I would say if you are speaking specifically of the drum line then i would have 1/10th at most of the band. 7-8 would be just fine and any more than ten and your going to hear nothing but drums. My HS marching band was something like 50 on average and we had a drumline specifically that was made of 11 but because they were well advanced they were able to play softer and not over power the rest of us.

what is the difference between a marching trombone and a marching baritone?
Q. now, let me refrase this, i play in a marching band. The baritone i'm refering to is an instrument not a singer.I have seen these instruments. Are they the same instrument? If they aren't, they look really similar. I find no difference between the two, so why do they have different names.
Asked by band geek011 - Sat Jun 2 19:59:45 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In my marching band experience (which is pretty extensive) I've never seen a differentiation between a marching trombone and a concert trombone. The only two drastically different types of trombone that I've personally seen (as in, the characteristics or mechanics of the instruments are completely dissimilar) are the slide trombone and the valve trombone. The valve trombone has an apparent slide on the front, but it is immovable. The pitch is instead controlled by three valves, like most other brass instruments. They are usually in the key of Bb, as opposed to C as trombones are usually in, and are made for trumpet players who need to play trombone but don't want to learn the slide positions. Valve trombones are available in C, but… [cont.]

Q. 1. Before a game if you are wearing jeans, always have a pair of shorts or sweats with you or you will freeze your butt off. 2. Marching + Mud + Flip Flops = No fun and muddy nasty feet. 3. Drumline guys are always going to be really weird.

A. 1. Marching Band is like a huge family that you'll never forget. 2. Wind and rain make everything more interesting, especially for color guard tosses close to drum major podiums. 3. Dr. Beat is God. 4. Band Camp are the best 2 weeks of the summer. 5. Marching band competitions are intense, it doesn't matter what anyone else says. 6. Every section has their own little quirks. 7. You miss it once it ends. 8. It is the best part of high school. Sorry, I went a little crazy there haha. I love marching band. :)

Asked by answer me choose me as best ans - Sat Sep 30 16:23:58 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, scholarships are possible, but if you are already unhappy with the commitment, you are in for trouble. You must enjoy what you are doing first. The practice time both structured and on your own will be much greater at the next level. Marching band can be a great experience. If you aren't willing to devote the necessary time to it, you will neither win a scholarship nor succeed at the next level.

I do not have a marching baritone yet. What can i do to practice until i get one?
Q. Where online can i get the scales for a marching baritone (fingerings included). how do i practice marching? is there any good beginner books out there that teach me how to play the marching baritone?
Asked by ihveaqstn - Mon Jul 23 14:56:28 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I play trumpet and I know what it's like to be sans instrument for a time. The best thing you can do is use your concert instrument to keep your lungs and the dexterity in your fingers up to par. If you're looking for beginner book with fingerings in them, go to a music store such as Sam Ash and look for Essential Elements beginner books for Baritone. As far as the marching part goes, you can't really practice until you know what the band director specifically wants you to do. Each band has a different stance and a different style of marching. Once you get to band camp and figure out what you're supposed to be doing, go out in the yard and practice marching around in a square, 8 counts at a time. That will help you get your steps… [cont.]
