A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound when hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. The term usually applies to an object used in a rhythmic context or with musical intent.

The word "percussion" has evolved from Latin terms: "percussio" (which translates as "to beat, strike" in the musical sense, rather than the violent action), and "percussus" (which is a noun meaning "a beating"). As a noun in contemporary English it is described in Wiktionary as "the collision of two bodies to produce a sound". The usage of the term is not unique to music but has application in medicine and weaponry, as in percussion cap, but all known and common uses of the word, "percussion", appear to share a similar lineage beginning with the original Latin: "percussus". In a musical context then, the term "percussion instruments" may have been coined originally to describe a family of instruments including drums, rattles, metal plates, or wooden blocks which musicians would beat or strike (as in a collision) to produce sound.

How do I get good at percussion without a drumset?
Q. Hi. I'm looking into percussion because I need to track drums for an ep I'm making. I'm okay with putting in a month or so of practice time (the drumming will be really basic, I just need to turn myself into a human metronome :P), but I can't get an actual drumset because of cost and space issues. Should I buy some bongos? A practice pad? A drum machine?

A. I would recommend a practice pad and a cheap metronome. The metronome will probably cost you between $5 and $20, depending on how good you need it to be. I'm not sure how much the drum pad will cost. I think that mine was fifty, but I got a really high quality one. As for the type of drum pad, you will probably want to get one with a rubber padding, they are quieter and hold up for a really long time. They can take a lot of abuse. Just don't pull on the rubber. Normally, it's only glued on, and it's a pain to get it to re-stick. There are also drum pads that you tighten like a drum head. But they are noisy, and after a while they loose their elasticity. Unfortunately, I haven't found any reliable links to a good instructional website, but… [cont.]

A. If the piano counts as a percussion instrument, of course it plays a huge part in music-making. I also love the triangle - it sounds so clear and it rings so much!

Is the piano a string instrument or a percussion instrument?
Q. i remember asking this question when i was little and i just don't remember what family it belongs to.. percussion because you hit the keys or string cause it tabs on strings.

A. I answered this exact question 2 days ago. Y!A has a search bar, you know. I have no idea what "cause it tabs on strings" means, but here is the answer I gave: This question gets asked in here periodically. The piano is both a chordophone (an instrument which produces sounds from strings over a resonating chamber) and a percussion instrument (because those strings are HIT or STRUCK by the piano's hammers to produce the sound). This is the criterion which makes the piano a percussion instrument). There will be those who post in here asserting that the piano is a string instrument - which is incorrect. A gong is made of brass but that does not make it a member of the brass family of instruments. Nor is a xylophone with its wooden bars a… [cont.]
