Q. Does anyone think the live version of "Monkey Island" by the 13th Floor Elevators sounds a little like the White Stripes? Roky's voice especially?

A. Wouldn't it be the other way around? Haven't the 13th Floor Elevators been around since the 60's? I do think the White Stripes do have a sound that is similar to a mix between punk and garage rock.

A. hmm...I can't really decide what their best song is. I got into them after hearing their cover of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (one of the best covers ever, by the way). I feel like listening to Dust, so I'll say it for now. Edit: mcandy, you're right. Billy Gibbons wasn't the guitarist for the Elevators...Roky and Stacy Sutherland (and Tommy Hall every now and then) were.

A. Nah. Close. But nah. Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, who became the Warlocks, who then became the Grateful Dead predated them or were at the very least contemporaries. Gracie Slick and the Great Society as well. Holy Modal Rounders was considered psychadelic before them. But again, they were contemporaries. So it's kind of difficult to really say who was "first." By the time 13th Floor Elevators were really making noise, there were plenty of other bands either in development or already making noise with them.

No 13th floor on elevators? Hotels still do that?
Q. Lately I haven't been to hotels with more than 13 floors but have you noticed this? There's never a 13th floor. They go from 1st-12th and then skip 13th, then 14th to above. I know what the 13 means, I'm just saying. I wanted to bring it up. "There's also no more rooms numbered 1408. Lmao. j/k" Really don't get that, lol. But OOKAY By the way, the 14th floor STILL is the 13th floor realistically speaking so... I wouldn't wanna be on that floor anyway.

Has anyone ever heard of the "13th Floor Elevator" group from the 60"s?
Q. I just watched a documentary on the lead singer Roky Erickson, his life then and now. Wow, how come I never heard of them? I mean, I was into the psychedelic stuff and they coined the term " Psychedelic Rock". I am totally amazed this fantastic group was out there and I missed them. Till now. I will locate a CD and buy it!

A. I first read about 13th Floor Elevators in Dave Marsh's book "The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made," which included "You're Gonna Miss Me" on the list. Q. In the spirit of Friday the 13th... Most apartment buildings and hotels do not have a 13th floor (the elevator #'s run 1 - 12 and then 14 up). Would you live on the 13th floor? Perhaps you already do but the elevator calls it the "14th" floor!

Why is it that that hotels don't have a 13th floor?

A. It is a superstition for a Hotel to have a 13th floor, so Most Hotels do Not have it by simply "skipping" the that Number. Some hotels where I've been they do have it but without rooms and guests, and instead is used for storage and such but Most of the Time it is Closed Down.

They believed it was the number that was strange and was causing this: The lights kept turning on if they are on, there were sightings of little pitch black shadows, fans would turn on, windows would shut. Reported by someof the people on the twelfth floor there were a lot of footsteps on the floor above them. The fourteenth reported there were people pounding on the ceiling in the thirteenth floor. Am I wrong about the 13th floor?
Q. I was alway under the assumption that most places will traditionally and intentionally not place a 13th floor (skip up to 14th) due to superstition. Well, I was just watching an episode of Mindfreak and Chris angel was doing a "stunt" with skeptics and elevator shafts at the Luxor. Well, at the end of the session they show Floor 13 on the wall. Was that placed there intentionally for the show, was it all staged? can someone explain that to me? Well, ok...I guess my question was actually about the show which only one of you has answered... A. there's always a 13th floor. either the building cuts short at just 12, or the keep building up. but you cant simply skip floor 13. ive known some buildings to use the 13th floor as storage because of the superstition reason. but you cant have a 15 floor building without a 13th floor, not possible. and as for the show the sign is probably staged to add suspense

A. The number 13 is supposedly bad luck because it was on Friday the 13th that Jesus Christ, was crucified. Some buildings are superstitious about it, and do not have a 13th floor. In christianity, Good friday, which was on the 13th supposedly, is the day the gates of heaven were openned. There were 13 apostles, 12 at one time, but 13 altogether. 12 apostles + Jesus = a group of 13. The United States started with 13 colonies. The United States Flag has 13 stripes. The seal of the United States, has an eagle with 13 arrows in one claw, and an olive branch with 13 leaves on it in the other, with 13 starts arranged over the eagle's head. The Lincoln Memorial has 13 columns.

Q. I am a big fan of music. I also like a fairly wide variety. Though, I'm not really into the newer mainstream stuff.
