13th Floor Elevators and/or White Stripes fans!?
Q. Does anyone think the live version of "Monkey Island" by the 13th Floor Elevators sounds a little like the White Stripes? Roky's voice especially?

A. Wouldn't it be the other way around? Haven't the 13th Floor Elevators been around since the 60's? I do think the White Stripes do have a sound that is similar to a mix between punk and garage rock.

What's the best 13th Floor Elevators song?
Q. Has to be "Slip Inside This House" for me, despite hearing "You're Gonna Miss Me" first on "Nuggets". Still think Roky grew as it went on... Sorry Darth, but I thought Billy Gibbons was in The Moving Sidewalks...correct me if I'm wrong, by all means... Seriously, "The Psychedelic Sounds Of..", and "Easter Everywhere" are really worth checking out

A. hmm...I can't really decide what their best song is. I got into them after hearing their cover of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (one of the best covers ever, by the way). I feel like listening to Dust, so I'll say it for now. Edit: mcandy, you're right. Billy Gibbons wasn't the guitarist for the Elevators...Roky and Stacy Sutherland (and Tommy Hall every now and then) were.

Were the 13th Floor Elevators the first psychedelic rock band? Why? Why not?
Q. Consult the world's largest Texas Psych fan group:

A. Nah. Close. But nah. Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, who became the Warlocks, who then became the Grateful Dead predated them or were at the very least contemporaries. Gracie Slick and the Great Society as well. Holy Modal Rounders was considered psychadelic before them. But again, they were contemporaries. So it's kind of difficult to really say who was "first." By the time 13th Floor Elevators were really making noise, there were plenty of other bands either in development or already making noise with them.

No 13th floor on elevators? Hotels still do that?
Q. Lately I haven't been to hotels with more than 13 floors but have you noticed this? There's never a 13th floor. They go from 1st-12th and then skip 13th, then 14th to above. I know what the 13 means, I'm just saying. I wanted to bring it up. "There's also no more rooms numbered 1408. Lmao. j/k" Really don't get that, lol. But OOKAY By the way, the 14th floor STILL is the 13th floor realistically speaking so... I wouldn't wanna be on that floor anyway.

A. I first read about 13th Floor Elevators in Dave Marsh's book "The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made," which included "You're Gonna Miss Me" on the list. That led me to tracking it down on the 1972 "Nuggets" compilation. It really is one of the great rock singles. Anyone who doesn't believe me, watch and listen to this:

Why is it that that hotels don't have a 13th floor?
Q. Recently at the hotel I am staying at I was in the elevator going to the ground floor. I watched the little panel in the top corner of the elevator go ping-ping, as we went down the floors. I watched the panel and realized that there was no 13th floor it went from 14 to 12. Does anyone know why?

A. While some high-rises skip the allegedly unlucky floor, many buildings aren't so superstitious. The Empire State Building, one of the most famous buildings in the world, has a 13th floor. And, according to its official site, the whole thing is available to lease. This article from USA Today explains that Fairmont hotels in Acapulco, Quebec City, and Vancouver don't have a 13th floor. Interestingly, Fairmont hotels in other cities do. The article goes on to mention that decisions regarding whether or not a building has a 13th floor usually rest with the building contractor. The photo-sharing site Flickr offers a few photos of elevators without a button for the 13th floor. However, the site also has plenty of pictures of elevators with a… [cont.]

A. It is a superstition for a Hotel to have a 13th floor, so Most Hotels do Not have it by simply "skipping" the that Number. Some hotels where I've been they do have it but without rooms and guests, and instead is used for storage and such but Most of the Time it is Closed Down.

A. It is due to superstition. In 1823, a hotel had 13 floors. They believed it was the number that was strange and was causing this: The lights kept turning on if they are on, there were sightings of little pitch black shadows, fans would turn on, windows would shut. Reported by someof the people on the twelfth floor there were a lot of footsteps on the floor above them. The fourteenth reported there were people pounding on the ceiling in the thirteenth floor. Nobody could reach the ceiling. And the floor was to seperate sounds, nothing could travel threw it. Something strange was happening. They believed the number '13' was the cause for this. Not all hotels are superstitous anymore but still some are. Yes, their is a place in Orlando,… [cont.]

Do tall buildings not have a 13th floor.?
Q. Does it go 10,11,12,14,15, like that in elevator? Why is the number 13 have a bad luck?
Asked by gear jammer - Mon Sep 24 01:57:53 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The number 13 is supposedly bad luck because it was on Friday the 13th that Jesus Christ, was crucified. Some buildings are superstitious about it, and do not have a 13th floor. In christianity, Good friday, which was on the 13th supposedly, is the day the gates of heaven were openned. There were 13 apostles, 12 at one time, but 13 altogether. 12 apostles + Jesus = a group of 13. The United States started with 13 colonies. The United States Flag has 13 stripes. The seal of the United States, has an eagle with 13 arrows in one claw, and an olive branch with 13 leaves on it in the other, with 13 starts arranged over the eagle's head. The Lincoln Memorial has 13 columns.

Music suggestions for me?
Q. I am a big fan of music. I also like a fairly wide variety. Though, I'm not really into the newer mainstream stuff. I despise rap (no offense meant) and the rock which is labeled "emo" (again, no offense meant). Here is a list of the musicians on my iTunes library. However, this list doesn't even compare to the bands/artists in my CD collection. But, if there is a band or artist that you think I may not have and think I would like, please say so! Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! Here is what is on my iTunes library, to give you an idea of what I like: 13th Floor Elevators 38 Special Abigail Washburn ACDC Aerosmith Al Green The Alan Parsons Project Alice Cooper The Allman Brothers Band America And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of… [cont.]
