How much music theory knowledge is necessary to study medieval music?

A. I agree with Delicio - the interwoven lines of medieval music are often functioning on a level that one does not appreciate without a decent background. Tell you what - get yourself a copy of Gradus ad Parnassum by FUX (that is pronounced FOOKS, so you do not get into trouble. Betcha that Yahoo *cleans up* the spelling!). It is the book that Mozart's teacher used to teach HIM - and countless thousands of other have learned from it. IT goes through the forms of *species counterpoint* - how melodies are built to weave around each other - in a Master and Pupil dialogue. Yes, it can be dry - but see how much of it you can comprehend on your own. If you have a sense of "Ah, Little Grasshopper, see if you can take the cola nuts from my… [cont.]

Would taped music be a good option for me?
Q. I love to sing and play music. I can't find anyone to get into a band with. All my friends are either in bands or talentless. So would it be a good idea to record the music and sing live with taped music. Would this be a good idea and is it common? Does it depend on the music?

A. The disadvantage of playing with a tape recorder or something like that is that it looks boring - only one person to look at it. You gotta be extra entertaining. Second is, for guitarists especially, is what are you going to do for rhythm? The two options i've seen are a drum machine or a laptop. The laptop is more expensive but you can literally record a full CD quality backing track. Unfortunately, the quality of your sound is completely dependent on house speakers... which could be a bad thing. The best way to go would be getting a rack setup, where you can plug your laptop into... but it would mean a mixer or preamp (virtualizer, perhaps), a power amp, and possibly other effects, too (EQ, compressor, vocal processor, etc). What music do you suggest listening to when doing homework?
Q. What bands/songs do you enjoy listening to when doing homework? I can't concentrate without music, but can't concentrate with the majority of the music I own, so what music works with you?

A. I have observed myself that my concentration level is higher when music is played in the background while I am doing any work. The best music is soft instrumental. Rock is too loud to distract you. If there are songs sung by someone are equally distracting as the lyrics and the modulation and pitch of voice distract. The most important thing to remember is that the music should be something very soft, soothing. Some which work best for me are a) Yanni - tracks - Nostalgia, Until last moment, One man, Nightingale b) Kitaro c) Titanic tracks - they are instrumental d) And if you like Indian music, then go for Sitar by Ravi Shankar e) Santoor by Shiv kumar sharma So, which one would you go for? What music would be good for 4-5year old kids to listen to while they are skating?
Q. I have been asked to make a CD for a skating party and I need good upbeat music that 4-5 year old kids could/will listen too. There are 3 boys and only 1 girls that are coming so the music has to be general, nothing too girl like, nothing to boy like. Any suggestions? They have to be able to "dance" to the music and enjoy what they are listening too. I need about 4 songs more.

How do you put music on your iPod Nano from your Computer?
Q. I just got an iPod nano and I have some songs from my old MP3 that I want to put on it. The setup isn't the same as my old MP3, where you could just click and drag music files into folders marked 'Music' or whatever. Do you have to have iTunes to put music on your iPod nano? If so is it possible to put already existing music files in my computer in there without having to go re-buy them?

A. You have to have itunes because Apple tries to prevent illegal downloading and such. You can drag your files into itunes but you have to have another copy of them in the computer. Hope I answered your question to your understanding. :)

How do you learn music theory?
Q. What I am looking for is a textbook to learn music theory but doesn't assume you don't know how to read music. I can read music but just want more information about chord structures and more advanced items than learning how to read music. Any ideas of a good textbook?

A. Well it's hard to say where you're at from what you describe. You say you can read, but not how well. Therefore, let me suggest Practical Beginning Theory, by Bruce Benward. I use it to teach students myself. In fact, I'm so darn nice that I'm going to include the link to the book on Amazon. The second one down is a very good copy ;)

Q. I am a 17 year old high school student who is planning on majoring in music in college. I understand I will have to take a LOT of music theory classes. However, I do not have a music theory class available at my high school. Does anyone know a workbook or something so that I can try to teach myself (with help from my band and choir directors) about music theory? Thank you for your help!

A. YES The Practice of Harmony It's pretty expensive, but I have one that I bought from my high school. It's a college music theory book. It's a workbook also. It has about 300 large pages. It's sooo helpful. You will know pretty much everything you'll need for college. You'll need a little help understanding, but it explains how to do everything in the book.

What music/song would best represent the romantic literary time period?
Q. I have a project about the romantic literary time period, and I think it would be great if I could include some music that best corresponds with the mood...but I'm having trouble finding any music or songs like that. It would be great if you could help!
Asked by Lilyyyyy... - Fri Aug 24 20:01:27 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Tchaikovsky is indeed one of the masters of the Romantic period, and you could use music from one of his ballets--say, Swan Lake or Romeo and Juliet--if you want an orchestra sound and a lot of emotion. Another good choice for a sweeping orchestral sound would be a symphony by Brahms. If you want less instrumentation, try a piano concerto by either Chopin or Liszt. On the other extreme, the grand "showmen" of the period were Verdi, Wagner, and Berlioz. Try listening to part of La Symphonie Fantastique (Berlioz), Tristan and Isolde (Wagner) or Aida (Verdi).

Q. Hi! I have a 14-year old student who is a "C" student. She knows it and is determined to improve on it. She has asked me (a music teacher) what kind of music will help her in her studies. A. First, sad to say but mozart doesn't make you smarter. Those studies that proved that were all proven false because the people who played mozart for their babies were oddly enough, the same ones who read to their babies, and talked to them, and did everything else. There is no music that will make you smarter by inactively listening to it, just as there is no pill that will make you stronger by simply putting it in your mouth. All good things cost, and smartness costs work. Some music can easy the pain of study, but it can't make the study easier.

A. You can delete it, but you will have to go to music, then find songs to put in your "profile playlist". However, you can only have up to ten songs on a myspace playlist. Just saying. (:
